The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with support from the German Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, hosted the “Western Balkans Study Visit – Climate Risks in the Transboundary Protected Areas". Held from May 12–16 in the Albanian Alps National Park, Albania, this initiative falls under the project “Experience Exchange between Central Asia and Western Balkans on Climate Change Informed Wildlife Conservation and Ecosystem-based Adaptation".
The study visit aimed to deepen understanding of climate risks affecting transboundary protected areas in the Western Balkans and to integrate climate-conscious strategies into their management. It also fostered knowledge-sharing on climate-resilient nature protection between the Western Balkans and Central Asia.
The event brought together 25 representatives from protected areas across three transboundary national parks in both regions. Participants engaged with key stakeholders, including Albania’s Ministry of Tourism and Environment, local governments, community representatives, NGOs, and the University of Shkodra.
Beyond facilitating the exchange of best practices, the study visit strengthened the capacity of protected area managers to implement the EU acquis, with a focus on climate resilience and nature conservation. It also raised awareness among local communities and decision-makers about the importance of sustainable, climate-considerate management of protected areas.
This collaborative effort marks a significant step toward building resilient ecosystems and promoting sustainable conservation practices across regions.
