FAO and Partners Highlight the Future of Sustainable Greenhouse Farming in Lushnja

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), in close collaboration with national experts and regional partners, convened a high-level panel in Lushnja to explore how sustainable agriculture can boost productivity in Albania’s vegetable sector — with a special focus on greenhouse farming in the Lushnja region.

Held under the theme “How Can Sustainable Agriculture Shape Productivity in Albania?”, the event brought together representatives from FAO Albania, the FAO Regional Office for Europe and Central Asia (REU), national institutions, and agricultural experts. The dialogue centered on climate-smart practices, value chain development, and regional cooperation as key drivers of transformation in the sector.

“Sustainability is not a trend — it’s how farmers protect their land and livelihoods,” said Lorena Pullumbi, Assistant FAO Representative in Albania. “FAO is supporting Albania’s transition toward greener, more inclusive food systems, in line with national development priorities and the Sustainable Development Goals.”

Participants discussed innovative approaches to strengthen the greenhouse value chain, improve market access, and enhance farmer knowledge. Valbona Ylli, Value Chain Analysis Expert, presented key data on the Lushnja vegetable sector, highlighting both opportunities and challenges — from labor shortages to climate risks.

Agronomist Astrit Balliu introduced training initiatives aimed at equipping farmers with new technologies and sustainable practices. These include a tailored Farmer Field School model focused on greenhouse crop management and climate resilience.

Pedro Marcelo Arias, Economist at FAO REU, emphasized the role of regional integration and responsible investment. “Food self-reliance, not isolation, is the path forward. Trade and cooperation are essential to safeguarding food security and nutrition,” he said.

This event is part of FAO’s broader engagement in Albania to promote sustainable agriculture, strengthen rural livelihoods, and support the country’s EU integration aspirations through policy, innovation, and inclusive partnerships.
