UNIDO champions metrology – measurement for all times, for all people

Through accurate measurement, metrology enables producers to demonstrate that their products are safe, of consistent quality, and comply with social and environmental standards. Without reliable metrology systems, a country’s exports may face rejection at borders due to safety or quality requirements, leading to economic losses, wasted resources and putting consumers at risks.

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) plays a crucial role in strengthening metrology capabilities worldwide. As UNIDO Director General Gerd Müller has emphasized, "UNIDO is committed to fostering fair and sustainable supply chains. What is necessary for this is reliable data, transparent processes, and trusted results which need accurate measurement and robust Quality Infrastructure. By strengthening these, we enable trade, ensure product safety and protect the environment." This commitment underpins UNIDO's work, which includes equipping national metrology institutes with cutting-edge instruments and technical expertise. The Organization also boosts industries by training businesses to master measurements, enabling them to guarantee quality and safety and unlock greater export possibilities. UNIDO helps countries reduce risks, improve product traceability, and support sustainable production practices.

In metrology, UNIDO following a series of interventions has recently supported Albania to take concrete steps toward international recognition by progressing with its accession to the Metre Convention - The treaty that created the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM ) and laid the foundations for a worldwide coherent system of measurements. Following a technical session with BIPM in March 2025 and national coordination activities, Albania is now in the final preparatory stage of the accession process. This milestone will ensure global acceptance of national measurements, supporting industry, trade, and regulatory compliance.

UNIDO’s global interventions significantly improve measurement reliability within supply chains, driving sustainable industrial growth. In Armenia, collaboration with the EU led to the establishment of advanced calibration laboratories, boosting traceability and enabling industries to meet export standards and enhance product quality. In Colombia, UNIDO’s support helped develop new legislation for pre-packaged goods, provided specialized equipment and training, and partnered with the National Metrology Institute to expand domestic production of reference materials. As a result, Colombia has emerged as a regional leader in fair trade and consumer protection, sharing its expertise and best practices with neighboring countries. These initiatives showcase UNIDO’s pivotal role in strengthening quality infrastructure, supporting export diversification, and promoting sustainable, inclusive trade.

As Industry 4.0 drives digital transformation, metrology is evolving into "Smart Metrology," integrating innovations such as machine-readable data and digital calibration certificates. This transformation enhances traceability and quality management across complex, digitalized value chains. UNIDO’s efforts ensure that all countries, including developing economies, can access and benefit from these technological advancements, helping to close the digital divide and foster greater global cooperation and sustainable industrialization.

This year’s World Metrology Day theme - “Measurements for all times, for all people” - underscores the enduring importance of accurate measurements. UNIDO works towards a future where such fundamental measurement certainty strengthens sustainable development for people, prosperity, and the planet.
